The healthiest diet to eat – a nutrient rich diet for good health and well-being!

Wild BlueberriesI have recently made some changes to my diet which have had a profound and recognisable effect on many areas of my health. This is the healthiest diet I have found to eat. This article discusses the changes I’ve made, what my diet now consists of, and the benefits I've noticed from changing to this diet.

I have been refining my diet for some years. Although it’s never at the centre of my focus, it is always something which I like to keep an eye on and make alterations to occasionally. I have had many diets, including fast-food, low calorie, low carbohydrate, low fat, and no dairy.

Out of all the diets I’ve had this one is by far the best. Although I can’t admit to ever having tried a vegan, vegetarian, or raw food diet. I enjoy both the taste and effect which meat and fish has on me and I’ve always considered those healthy things to eat.

How is diet relevant to bettering your life?

The old saying – “you are what you eat” is not without its wisdom. Eating junk all day does not only affect your appearance, it affects your mindset, your emotions, and your life. I do not think it is completely necessary to change your diet if you are going to make changes in other areas of your life, but it certainly helps.

What did I used to eat before this diet?

Well it was not the most healthy, or the least healthy of diets. But a basic list of the kinds of foods I ate is bread, fried meat, Chinese food, pizzas, tuna, mayonnaise, eggs, sausages, bacon, and so on…

Reading the list now it actually sounds quite an unhealthy diet – however, I had little indication such was the case. With the exercise I do regularly I had a good body shape and didn’t have any noticeable problems which I could attribute to my diet.

It wasn’t until I began experimenting with changes to my diet that I realised it was having a negative effect in areas I was not aware of.

What my diet consists of – roughly in order of how much I eat it

My diet is aimed to be nutrient rich, and without any empty calories.

Fish  –  high protein, healthy oils, always makes me feel great
Red Meat   –  high protein
Berries  –  nutrient dense, anti-oxidant
Eggs  –  high protein
Other Meat   –  high protein
Lettuce, cabbage, etc  –  some nutrients
Carrots, Broccoli  –  nutrient dense
Other Fruit  –  some nutrients
Mushrooms  –  some protein and some nutrients
Black-eyed Beans  –  some nutrients, anti-oxidant
Cheese  –  high protein
Nuts  –  high protein, some nutrients

What I do not eat

No grain

Including: bread, cereal, rice, pasta, pizza, corn, fast-food.

Reason: basically these are empty carbohydrates.

No sugar (other than fruit)

Including: sweet sauces, sweetened meat, honey, syrup, sugary drinks.

Reason: refined sugar is pretty much the worst type of food you can eat. It does absolutely nothing for you apart from a sugar-rush followed by a carbohydrate crash.

The sugar found in fruit is actually a healthy way of receiving energy – it is processed slower by the body and as such does not cause as large an insulin spike or a carbohydrate crash.

No high calorie, low nutrient carbohydrates

Including: potatoes, turnips, etc.

Reason: empty carbohydrates again – plus there is some evidence to suggest these foods poison you.

Avoid salty foods

Including: bacon, sausages, burgers, pork scratching.

Reason: there’s many reasons to suggest why excessive salt is bad for you and that we have far too much of it in our modern diets.

The benefits this diet has had

Losing body fat

I certainly didn’t need to lose weight, but there is no doubt about it that changing to this diet has caused me to begin losing body fat.

A ripped six-pack is one of my minor-goals this year though, so obviously I was going to have to lose a little weight at some point – this is definitely going to help.

Skin quality

It’s not the kind of thing I pay much attention to, but nevertheless I have noticed a vast increase in my skin quality. I didn’t even realise there was a problem with it to be honest!

However, my skin is noticeably smooth, healthy feeling, and without ailments such as spots or dry areas.

As I said, I never noticed that I had any of those things before my diet change – but afterwards they became noticeably absent.

General well-being

Although I fairly consistently notice my general well-being gradually increase through the other regular practices which I perform regularly, I have definitely noticed a sustained spike from making this dietary change.

Sometimes you just have to trust your intuition and your feelings on things like this, and that’s exactly what I’m doing here. My body has learnt very quickly to welcome the taste of fresh berries in a way which suggests to me that I was lacking something which now I am getting.

Update: 03/03/2010

This is a photo of the 8-pack which I acheived using a combination of this diet and moderate excercise.

sweet "pack" man!

I personally feel I need to reevaluate my diet. Its not really unhealthy, per se. It is just I let myself slip too often and I feel I am eating too many carbs. I personally find it hard to find a lunch or something to take to work that is low in carbs. Most things are sanwiches, etc. Maybe I'll make up some sort of fruit bowl or a salad to get things going instead of sandwiches.

I hardly used to eat any fruit before the start of this year. Now it's the main part of my diet.

Try it out man, I highly recommend berries especially. You'll notice that you feel "generally better" after just a few days to a week.
