Becoming intensely driven – 3 traps to avoid when fuelling your goals

To achieve your big goals you need to be extremely motivated – and motivation is provided by powerful emotions which stem from tapping into a potent wanting. It is the ravenously driven people who are ultra-successful. But how is it that you can find this special seam of rocket-fuel to propel towards the goals you really want to make happen?
 
What I really want to discuss in this article is three ways in which you may trip up when trying to create this kind of powerful determination. As such I don’t want to go into too much detail about actual processes you can use to discover what it is that you truly want – so I’ll be assuming that you already have a good idea about what it is that you deeply desire. If you don’t, then go read this and see if it helps.
 
What you should have is a strong feeling that you really really want something – either a material object, or a situation, or a skill-set, or to change yourself in one way or another. You should not only have that, but you should also have some idea about what it feels like to have already achieved that – you will have built this feeling up from visualisation. As such you will also have some ideas of the things you’re going to need to do to change your life in a way that you can make these things happen – in-fact hopefully you’ve already started to take action and make things happen.
 
So now you may find yourself in a situation where-by things are occasionally difficult, and wouldn’t it be really useful if you could just amp up your core motivation and drive so that in those really difficult situations you’ll get that rush from the core of your being to push further and harder and really make these changes happen for you in your life.
 
The process of doing that involves more visualisation, more focus, and discovering more about your feeling of desire for your goals. If you understand energy concepts at all then what you want to be doing is throwing more energy into your dreams – making them a powerful talisman of desire in your life.
 
Sometimes you can learn more by being shown what to avoid, rather than what to actually do. This allows you to discover on your own the path to deep desire – but with the knowledge of traps which I myself have fallen in to in the past and now you will not. ;)
 

Three things to avoid when amplifying your desire

 

1. Don’t try to create emotion.

 
You may have realised by now that creating emotion is incredibly difficult. You can create an image in your mind and have an emotional response to it, you can listen to a song and feel happy; but to just create emotion on its own is very challenging.
 
What about just smiling to yourself?
 
Although it may seem like you’re creating emotion, the emotion is actually an effect and not a cause. The cause is the fact that you’re smiling, maybe this is couple with thoughts of loving-kindness towards yourself or thoughts about good things in your life. It is from the source of these ideas in the mind that emotion happens – emotion is a result.
 
Instead of trying to create emotion, spend your time tapping more deeply into your desire and energizing it.
 
What does that mean?
 
It means you want to have as crisp a focus as you can on what it is you actually want, and to really feel all the reasons you want it. Don’t try to make reasons up. Don’t feel like you have to throw things in there like “I want my multi-million dollar business so I can really start helping other people” if you are not motivated by philanthropy. Only discover the reasons which naturally generate that desire for you.
 
Picture of a blackhole When you have a vivid idea of what it is you really want, then you can energize that idea. Hold it in your mind and throw energy into it.
 
Have you ever cracked a whip? You know if you just kinda limply flick the whip it makes no noise at all? But if you throw more of the right kind of energy into your wrist you can make a loud cracking noise?
 
That’s what you want to be doing here, except with ideas. So let’s assume to begin with you have a relatively vivid idea of what you desire. Well now I want you to assume that your idea is actually relatively limp... now you’re going to liven it up – pour more energy into it. Let it grow in your mind, let it become more vivid and more alive.
 
This is a difficult concept to understand, and an extremely difficult one to explain. I’ll extrapolate further on this process some point in the future. For now, if you get it, you get it. If not, don’t sweat about it. Just have the realisation that emotion is a result of an energized idea.
 

2. Don’t visualise something when you’re not feeling it.

 
Let’s say that you perform 10 minutes visualisation every day and every day you visualise the same thing. Sometimes you really feel like you want that thing, other times you don’t.
 
Big mistake...
 
If you’re not feeling it, don’t visualise it. Either visualise something else, or just do 10 minutes meditation on the breath instead.
 
By visualising something when you’re not really feeling your desire for it you are doing nothing to increase your desire. I’m tempted to say that you’ll in-fact be lessening it, but I can’t say with certainty that’s the case.

What is the case is that visualisation of something when you’re not really feeling that core hungering for it will not do your goals any particular good. So if you find yourself in that situation, visualise one of your other goals which in that particular moment you are feeling more strongly about.
 

3. Don’t ask too many questions about the unknown.

 
Sometimes questions can be useful, especially when they move you towards a solution or actually put you in a place of success. 
 
However, sometimes there will be many unknowns in your future – even with regards to your goals – and in this circumstance not all of those questions are ready to be answered.
 
If you attempt to find answers to too many questions too early on in your journey towards a specific goal then you risk falling into a position of confusion – a state where by you look like a cartoon character with a load of question marks hanging over their head ;) 
 
It’s difficult to say which questions you should seek solutions for, and which you should just let settle and perhaps address in the future. But just by knowing this information – that it is in-fact beneficial to leave some questions unanswered – you have put yourself in a better position. 
 
The reason being that now you realise that if you come upon a large group of questions, many of which are seemingly impossible to answer, you know that you can put some of those questions aside and just say to yourself – “Maybe I’ll just leave those for now, and perhaps come back to them later.”
 

Summarizing these points...

 
1. Focus vividly upon what it is you desire, and then energize it.
2. When you visualise, visualise the goals you are feeling right in that moment.
3. Allow some excessive questions about the future to go unanswered.

Very well said - Emotions are really important while visualizing. if we dont feel it, there is no point visualizing it.

I believe that having too many questions raises doubts, and doubts in your ability to achieve your goals is very harmful.

Yes this is true, but one of my points in this article is that emotion can not be forced, but that it occurs as a result of an energized idea.

So in order to raise ones emotional reaction (or in-fact decrease it) one increases the energy of the idea/visualisation.

If you think of something which makes you really happy, you are not just thinking of content, but also you will find that the content you just summoned up is energized. If you put even more energy into it then will make you even happier.

Whereas if you summon up the image again, but this time put as little energy into it as possible, then you will find your emotional reaction diminished. We do not react to content (Cred: Steve Pavlina) - we react to the energy of that content.

I glanced through some of your articles and went through some in detail. I felt that a lot of work had gone into creating the content of these articles. I felt that there was a strong objective from your side that each article should be precisiely detailed and correctly expressed. I wanted to know how you came to be writing on these topics and read the section about you. I cannot believe so much change can come to someone so quickly.

I often cannot believe myself the place that I came from - it sometimes seems like another person in another world when I look back. I've been pursuing a path of development for over three years now.

But these days I am surrounded by people with equal and even more exceptional stories to tell.

When I say I believe you can acheive anything if you put your mind to it I'm not just spouting rhetoric. Some of the more "every-day" people I come into contact with just think that I am either an exception, a maverick, "one of the lucky ones" or just plain mad - especially when they hear about some of my amibtions for this year.

I would appreciate any comments or questions you have about any of my articles. As far as I'm concerned I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go (in-fact I will always be looking for the greener grass ;) - he who wastes a second has not discovered the value of life ), however I still have a lot of experience and knowledge which can be extremely useful to someone who's only just realising what they might be capable of being.
